It’s FRIDAY! How did we get here so fast? When I used to work in an office the days would crawl by, but now that I work from home they zip by! So here we are again for another weekly roundup of all the newly added vintage to Thrifty Vintage Kitten.

This week I added an eclectic assortment of styles to the shop. No real theme this week…just a bunch of pretty items for you!  See something you like or want more info? Just click on the picture!

(Check out the 40s pink rayon dress below. It’s seriously the sweetest thing I’ve ever listed. If it’s possible to be in love with a dress, consider me a goner.)

I don’t often add vintage shoes to the shop. In my personal life I’ve never been much of a shoe girl, so I think that influences my business as well. At an estate sale, when there are only seconds left on the clock, I grab the vintage clothes and leave behind the shoes! But a couple of weeks ago I was at an estate sale and managed to snag a couple of real beauties! I just got them photographed, so here’s a sneak peak. I hope to add them to the shop soon!

estate-sale-sign

Saturday morning I woke up way before the sun was up and headed out to an estate sale. The way estate sales work around here is if you want to be one of the first ones in the door (which I always do…that’s how you get the good stuff) you have to camp outside hours before the sale opens. It’s kinda boring and time consuming, but the competition is fierce here so that’s how it is. I like to kill time by crocheting.

Crocheting a baby blanket for my new niece!

When I first started going to estate sales, back before I really understood how they worked, I would mosey in on the last day and I still managed to find vintage. These days there’s enough dealers out there that the good stuff gets scooped up within minutes of the sale starting. Here’s proof. This was my pile after 35 minutes of the sale starting:

My pile ‘o vintage at checkout!

I was number 8 in line and there were two other dealers ahead of me! Between the three of us we cleaned out the closets. I’m pretty ruthless when it comes to getting inventory for my shop. I’m typically a very reserved, polite person, so I have to scrape deep to bring the pit bull out of me during these sales. It’s uncomfortable for me, but when getting that amazing 1950s cocktail dress is the difference between walking or RUNNING to that closet, it’s worth it. Many apologies to the man I jumped over (hurdling style) that was crouching looking at jewelry (eep).

In total I walked away with 35 items. Most of them are 1950s dresses, with a few 1960s dresses, and sprinkle of baby boy clothing in there as well.

Above is a small sampling of the women’s dresses I found. I washed them all up and now they are just waiting to be pressed and photographed. If the sun makes its appearance this week I hope to get some good shots.

You know how you feel after a really stressful event? Like, maybe a really important presentation you have to give or a particularly demanding test? That’s how I feel after these sales. I commit hours to them and so if they don’t go my way it feels like a huge fail. So because of that I’m a bundle of nerves for the whole thing. Then as I’m driving home, I’m like AHHH. I did it! And I only had to hurdle one person. ;)

Hope you all had a great weekend. Next week I have a bundle of new inventory coming to the shop so keep an eye out! Spring is in the air! (at least I’m pretending it is. Never mind the snow on the ground right now.)

This past weekend I drove out of state to go to an estate sale for what looked to be a promising selection of vintage women’s dresses from the 1940s. Unfortunately, the dresses were scooped up by someone else while I waited in line to get into this very teeny house. What I discovered that made the long trip worth it was a closet FULL of 1950s little girls’ party dresses! Behold…

Vintage baby clothes

This is just a small sample of what I brought home! I came home with 4 bags of vintage kids clothes!

So many pretty dresses!

So this is how I spent part of my Saturday night! (After I’d washed all of them!)

I imagine moms of the 1950s spent most of their time ironing. Puff sleeves and pleats take forever!

Vintage kids clothes are so fun. I find something so irresistibly charming about them, don’t you?

These items will be trickling into the shop a few at a time starting today!

1957 Good Housekeeping Magazine

Good Housekeeping cover, April 1957

I adore looking through old magazines. Talk about a step back in time! Recently I got my mitts on a Good Housekeeping from April 1957. It was only 35¢! The pages smell a little musty and are yellowed, but I don’t mind! With classic article topics like “10 Ways to Look Different” that suggest you “change your dress color” and “point your eyebrows out” to a full-length article asking “To Refreeze or Not to Refreeze?” life just seemed so simple and sweet in the 50s.

But the real prize are the advertisements. Check out these incredibly revealing (and sometimes hilarious!) peaks into the past!

A Kotex “belt”? Oh my god.

Such a pretty bottle of makeup!

Why isn’t there a spray nozzle on the starch bottle? Would you just dump it on?

Underwear sure has come a long way. I’d love to step back in time and shows these ladies a pair of thong underwear. Imagine!

Vintage 1950s underwear ad

Obviously.

Vintage 1957 Good Housekeeping ad Perma-lift Magic Oval Pantie

Compared to today’s makeup this probably isn’t very good, but the pink liquid looks so pretty I want to try some!

Vintage 1957 Good Housekeeping ad Revlon Touch and Glow Makeup

There’s nothing cuter than vintage baby clothes!

Vintage Carter's ad 1957

To think this staple was once “new!” I use this stuff all the time!

Imagine!

Aren’t these fun? I’ll probably eventually do another post on some of the articles I found in here. Such a time capsule! Let me know what you think in the comments!

Spring break is coming…is it here yet? Now? Please? It’s currently 18 degrees here in Chicago so my mind is looking ahead to warmer days. Are we there yet?

Since Spring Break is on its way (not soon enough) I’ve been a busy little bunny listing summer rompers in the shop. While spring may be a ways away, it’s a good idea to get your shopping done a little early so you’re not panicked looking for cute stuff at the last minute. Get ‘em before they are gone! You might even spy a really rad little yellow swimsuit number down there. So cute and perfect for a Palm Springs getaway!
